Renewable Energy should not be thought of as a political issue, rather a way of using history to protect our future. The old fashion ways of using wind and water to generate energy is not out dated. In fact there are new advancements that make natural energy sources increasingly more efficient. These renewable sources such as wind and solar power have benefits that outweigh those of non-renewable. Renewable energy creates affordable, regionally produced power that never runs out of supply, while creating local jobs for retail, manufacturing, and installation. This will reduce our dependency on foreign resources while protecting our environment and the beautiful state we live in.
There is no reason us as Nebraskans, who live in one of the most natural untouched areas of the country, should not support such ideas. Nebraska ranks sixth in the country in wind energy potential.
While the initial cost and change of a renewable system may make some apprehensive, it should be looked at as a long term investment, such as a home or vehicle.
This year the federal government passed the ‘Net Metering’ bill. This means that if the energy you produce is less than the energy consumed you will receive credit for your excess energy from the power company, in essence spinning your meter backwards.
Support also comes in the form of the American Recovery and Re-investment Act of 2009. This allows consumers and small businesses to take 30% tax credit off the installed cost of a wind turbine, with the option of receiving a cash grant for your credit.
There are many other grants and assistance your local suppliers would be happy to help you with.
Development of Renewable Resources meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
