I found that shopping for Christmas on foot helped me keep it local this year. It's amazing what you see when you have more time to look at what you are walking past (windows, shops, advertising fliers). Thanks for the reminder before the holidays.…

LGbD Green Column #20 – Lincoln Couple Journeys Toward Energy Independence

Written by W. Cecil Steward, FAIA, President; Joslyn Castle Institute For Sustainable Communities

In spring 2007, a Lincoln couple downsized from a suburban half-acre ranch to a smaller home and lot in the Near South Neighborhood.

Their decision to downsize was based on several factors. Both Bob Pewthers and Carol Smith, avid walkers and bikers, found access to their favorite destinations would be easier if they were more centrally located. A

LGbD Green Column #19 - Humans Must Learn to Engineer Repairs to the Planet

Written by W. Cecil Steward, FAIA, President; Joslyn Castle Institute For Sustainable Communities

Neither the powers that be nor traditional Green thinking will solve the cascading climate catastrophes about to hit us, warns pioneer ecologist Stewart Brand.

Civilization is at an historical crossroads similar to just before World War II, Brand writes in his 2009 book, Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto. Everyone knows something terrible is about to unfold but no one agrees on wh… Continue

LGbD Green Column #18 - How Far is it From Copenhagen to Lincoln?

Written by W. Cecil Steward, FAIA, President; Joslyn Castle Institute For Sustainable Communities

Distances in today’s world are relative to effective communications, networks and connections, our systems of human values and access to decision leaders. Upon what other foundations can equity and justice be assured for the public in public policy settings?

The recent international climate change discussions in Copenhagen and the meager outcomes likely seem very far away if you live in one of nor… Continue

LGbD Green Column #17 - Green Building, Green Campus, Green Planet

Written by W. Cecil Steward, FAIA, President; Joslyn Castle Institute for Sustainable Communities

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC), developer of LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), reports that 30 percent of the total annual energy used in the United States is consumed by buildings.

With this in mind, architectural firm DLR Group and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have collaborated to ensure the design for the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Cen… Continue

LGbD Green Column #16 - Keeping it Local Saves Money, Resources and Builds Community

Written by W. Cecil Steward, FAIA, President; Joslyn Castle Institute For Sustainable Communities

Local businesses are cashing in on recycling. Besides saving money, energy and reducing unnecessary waste, their efforts economically strengthen the community. Here are two examples, one urban and one rural.

Straw, Sticks & Bricks is a retail store at 700 O St. selling green building materials and sustainable lifestyle products. With the poor economy, the business was having difficulty.

After… Continue

Hey there, Christine. I work with Repower America here in Nebraska and I'm in search of local folks like yourself to help us emphasize how important clean energy legislation is RIGHT NOW! I would love to meet with you to talk about ways we can work together. Please give me a call as soon as you can. With the Boxer-Kerry bill dropping today... we have to act NOW!!! My phone number is 712-304-1089. Thanks much. Take care and stay green. :)

I would say older. Her parents Bob Hunt and Linda McKee are no longer together; I don't recall them talking about local relatives (your husband's cousin). It did occur to me that she would be interested in green topics - like you. Nice visiting with you.

I am thinking of an age-mate of my daughter, and the more I think about it I believe she is Kristin Hunt.

Hey, have you thought about painting your rain barrel the same color as your house so it blends in? I'm going to do that and then paint really simple flowers (like kindergarten) around the bottom.
