August 2009 Nebraska Solar Energy Society Update

Attention ALL.... here comes the Sun *
The deadline for registration for the Inaugural Class "Introduction to Solar Energy" at Metropolitan Community College approaches and at least 4 more students are needed. The class will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:45pm September 2 to November 11, 2009. Following this intro MCC plans to offer additional courses in renewable technologies, trying to anticipate the industry's movement toward certification or licensing.

THIS is our start, Ladies and Gentlemen, and YOU or someone you know, or love, or saw wandering aimlessly, could be in on the ground floor (or more likely roof-top, so to speak.) Registration has been described as <$200. The course ID number is ELTR 2900 . Anyone willing to underwrite a student or loan a willing attendee the cost of registration, please let our President know at lightenup1@cox.net .

Also in the NSES SkunkWerks...

* NSES will participate in the Information Faire at Village Pointe which will be held during Green Omaha Coalition's Green Home Tour on September 19th.
* Planning is moving forward for the NSES portion of the American Solar Energy Society's 14th Annual Solar Home Tour on Saturday, November 3rd.
* The Second Solar Panel Workshop (SPW II) is scheduled for November 14 and 15 and two teaching assistants have been designated.
* All members and interested parties are asked to mark (mentally or in writing) the location of any and all sustainable energy installations they see as they travel about our fair city, county and state. Please forward this census info to our NSES Membership end-table (he doesn't make a very good Chair) tjzimmer@cox.net .
* The By-Laws are being assembled as we speak/read/write.

All these events may be found in the NSESInfo calendar on our website; http://www.nebraskases.org .

G'day to all the Lincoln Green Sceners.

Tomorrow is the long anticipated Nebraska Solar Tour. Today is also a red-letter day, since the October newsletter has been "published." You can read it at http://tinyurl.com/ygy2a2x . (The link will take you to a pdf copy of the newsletter, which is stored at Google Docs.)

Is there anyone in the group who feels they are up to speed and wholly competent in photo-voltaics that would like to help me take a critical look at a study that was done for an Omaha building recently?

I suspect that the information we recieved from our engineering consultant was coming from so far out in RIGHT field, that it was dismissive and unfairly slanted. Perhaps not. I would welcome some help from anyone who has deeper, broader expertise.

Could we start an informal census/resource list of solar installations in the state? I think we would be building a useful tool by simply jotting down addresses or gps coordinates of homes or other buildings with solar panels of any kind we come across during our daily travels. It might be more difficult to tell if a building has a solar heat-retaining wall or floor, so I don't think we have to be quite that invasive.
