Lincoln Green Scene

Lincoln, NE: sharing what "green" we have to attract what we lack.

I have posted a forum discussion regarding this bill in the Forum tab, but thought I would bring it specifically to the Bikes Group, too.

Not long ago, Steve Larrick posted a comment that trail building from Lincoln to Omaha has halted in certain areas because of a few land-owners protesting it's completion. This must have sparked Senator Pankonin of the Bellvue/Papillion area to propose LB 134.

The Sierra Club lobbyist Ken Winston stated in his last Legislative Update Blog Post that he opposes this bill. "This bill is undemocratic since it would only benefit a few landowners, while trails benefit thousands of runners, walkers and bikers."

I think I oppose this bill protecting a few landowners from eminent domain where other home-owners are not protected. The Supreme Court supported the expanded the reach of eminent domain in 2005.

Please contact your state senator in opposition to this bill.

Yes, LB 134 was drafted to prevent the Lincoln-to-Omaha bike trail from being completed as planned. It would have the further impact of making it much more difficult to build bike trails anywhere in the state of Nebraska.

I see bike trails as an affordable form of public transportation. Bike trails greatly reduce our dependence on burning more oil.

Thanks to Andrea for raising awareness about the threat to bike trails posed by LB 134. Be sure to contact your State Senator to express your views.

Is there any group who will be at the Lincoln Earth Day 2009, Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2009, 1-5 p.m. who will be having a booth and also having a letter writing session to oppose L.B. 134? This would be a great opportunity to gather a lot of letters and/or signatures to send to their senators. I have already asked The Great Plains Trails Network, and the Great Plains Bicycling Club, and Jayne Synder, but I haven't heard back from them yet.
