Lincoln, NE: sharing what "green" we have to attract what we lack.

What obstacles keep you from walking, biking, or riding the bus to work?

Perhaps some of you work in an industrial park far from sidewalks. Or maybe you walk or bike to work sometimes and have to use the car at other times.

Maybe you are not able to take advantage of $.25 February StarTran bus rides because you are not sure you will make it to work on time?

What are YOUR obstacles for walking, biking, or riding the bus to work?

None! I bike, walk, or bus to work daily, regardless of weather.

Matt, I'm somewhere between Dennis and Amanda when it comes to obstacles.

But I am really glad to have the perspective of someone new to the area. I found that I didn't ask around about routes for the bus until gas prices were insane. Like it was a do or broke situation.

I can understand that if a bus system is hard to fund due to ridership that the routes would change or hours wouldn't go very late. What I don't understand is why the website can't have maps and easy-to-use iphone or mobile versions. I do like their rss/twitter, but it's not as helpful as maps when routes change. Maybe there are plans in the works for that to change.

BUT, over the wicked cold times, the StarTran was NEVER late this winter. Much more reliable than me and my snow shovel.

All of the maps are online - as individual routes and all routes combined. But they are just like the printed copies. Maybe they could add the routes to their interactive city map. I'm sure they would consider your suggestions for better e-maps..... StarTranInfo@lincoln.ne.gov

I think I've added 10 years to my life span in the last 3-4 years from reduced winter driving stress...

I live in Omaha, but my obstacles are limitations of the bus route and scheduling. I live downtown, and I can get to work in about 10 minutes via car/I-80. I checked the bus schedule, and it would take me 45 minutes via the 15/55 route. In addition, I like to work out during the day, and the bus doesn't go to where my gym is. In Omaha, the bus doesn't go many places west. I live about 8 miles from work, and I would love to bike, but there are not any safe bike paths from downtown to my office on 84th and F. I walk wherever I can downtown, and take my bike to other places downtown, but I haven't found a good way to make it feasible to get to work. Hopefully, Mayor Suttle's plan to extend bike paths in Omaha will be helpful in the near future.

I enjoy the bus, BUT would recommend these improvements: 1. My route is a double route (one route automatically turns into the other when it reaches downtown), but occasionally one bus goes off line and I have to transfer onto another. I HATE transferring because I have missed the connecting busses numerous times (b/c my bus arrives downtown late) and then I have to wait 1/2 hour for the next one! Besides better communication between these connecting busses, why don't they list on the schedules the times that connections will need to be made? I'd avoid those times. and 2. wouldn't it be great if the busses all had GPS trackers and we could log on and see where our bus is? That would save me from standing outside for 10 minutes each morning.
