Lincoln Green Scene

Lincoln, NE: sharing what "green" we have to attract what we lack.

Help! Myself and several others that I know want rain barrels. But no one wants those ugly industrial looking ones on their house. I've see some pictures posted on the Green Scene that look great. Are people making these on there own? Is there anywhere local we can buy them?

I make and sell rain barrels and composters from the ugly industrial looking barrels that were headed for a land-fill and recycle them. They are easily painted to any color you want. I can install them too. These were food barrels with tomatoes inside a bag, inside the barrel. We make them mosquito proof and put a garden hose adapter on the spigot on the bottom. The metal band holding the removable lid in place is lockable for safety.

If you need more water, I am about to start using a new system that stores 275 gallons, and can be pressurized to push the water uphill, without a pump. More on that as research and development progresses...
Anyway, call me if you have any questions, please. My phone number is 326-4834

Lots of places sell them- try QP hardware (three locations, I think) or the city mission I think is selling them to raise money. Whereever you get one- just paint it- flowers are nice around the bottom- simple ones like grade-school art look really cool.

Got my rather nice-looking "opaque" plastic barrel for free from Farmland Foods in Crete. Found it via Lincoln's Materials Exchange. They had a few others that I snatched up for my co-workers. If it looks like my co-workers are going to slack off and let them sit around in our garage I will check with you to see if you still need one (assuming you think it looks OK). Since it's plastic it probably needs to get put away in the winter to avoid cracking, which I assume isn't a problem with the metal "industrial" barrels.

I called up the mission today to order a rain barrel. The previous comment said to call Sasha. Sasha gave me the number for the mission and said to ask for Pam. 402 475-1303 The prices listed earlier are correct, but the partially assembled ones are only $50, instead of $65 because some parts you have to do yourself.

They sold two this morning and have 8 more ready to go after I reserved mine for pickup today. They have around 50 more barrels ready to be modified. They get them from a place in Norfolk (I think) and can get more. Pam said she is sending out a flyer in a mailing to reg donors and she expects a lot of orders to come in. Said this year they are testing it out and hope to make it one of their bigger projects next year.

I will post pics soon.

Rain Barrels!
A pretty cool rain barrel idea. This design was done with snow fence, wood stain, and copper wire. Courtesy of Gina Egenberger

Do you have any cool installed rain barrel pictures?? I'd love to have them :)
