Lincoln Green Scene

Lincoln, NE: sharing what "green" we have to attract what we lack.

Welcome!

I'm a graphic designer here in Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm originally from Colorado, and people always ask me why I am still here. :) The truth is that my hometown has grown a lot since I went to school there, and Lincoln's people are great to be around. And I love the city of Lincoln for it's accessibility -- walking paths, parks, people, community, and government.

I guess my main interest is graphic and web design, and I completely geek out over print, web, and local politics. :) And recently, Bo and Husker football.

I recently bought an older house, so I'm excited to improve it--every tiny bit will help. The big stuff I'm going to wait until 2009 to do (tax credits for green improvements were extended, but only for 2009). Spring of 2009, I intend to get a heat pump! But to be honest, I really want a moped.

I hope to meet people who like to experiment with green solutions in their own lives, and I can't wait to meet more experts who can help us shape a new market in green technology. The best part of it is meeting so many people who are interested in it, too.

Oh, and when times get really tough, I like a good sense of humor.

I'm a life-long Nebraskan, have been in Lincoln since '82, and have travelled a lot during that time.
Have belonged to a number of environmental organizations for a couple decades, but because of travel for work I haven't been as actively locally as I wanted. Starting to rectify that now.

My main goal is to help people connect with each other... to listen to what they are trying to accomplish and match them up with other contacts who are doing work in that area. Since my work involves talking to a lot of people and organizations, that puts in position to do the meeting & matching.

My day job? I lead a regional wealth management practice, helping people evaluate their financial situation and then helping them implement an investment plan to work towards their goals. I also have an emphasis in socially responsible investing (SRI) and "green investing" (companies working with alternative energy, industrial efficiency, sustainable building, etc.).

Other organizations in which I'm active:
Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Centre ("The Ross") -- member of corporate committee
UNL Alumni Association, Lincoln Chapter -- member of board of directors
Sheridan Lutheran Church -- member of congregation council
Lincoln Green by Design -- member of steering committee, and Economics & Finance Committee
U.S. Green Building Council Nebrask Chapter
Omaha's Green Business Council
Green Drinks (Lincoln, Omaha, Nebraska City)
Drinking Liberally (Lincoln, hope to make it to other cities)

Also help support:
Friends of Lied, Omaha Performing Arts, Sheldon Art Museum, Nebraska Wildlife Federation, United Nations Association Nebraska Chapter, Lincoln Arts Council, plus a number of national organizations working with the environment and social justice.

Hello,

Well, the real reason that I'm here is to learn. I have always though of myself as someone who strives for a "green" lifestyle, even though I haven't always followed through, but I joined this web site because I know some of the people involved, IE Andrea and Michelle, and I am really interested in finding out more about the "green scene" in our fine city of Lincoln NE. As of this point, I am not really active in any "green" groups or activities, since most of my time is tied up in school and work, but as I get closer to graduation I will most likely have a bit more time and will hopefully have more chances to get involved, also (no thanks to me (more thanks to Sarah and Jayson, two of my room mates)) I am a recycle-r...

Anywho enough about what I want to do and what I'm here to eventually do, and on to the introduction of me. I am a 22 year old Film Studies/English major at UNL and I currently work at Barnes and Noble. I am obsessed with film, music, comic books and good literature (when I have time). I also recently started a blog where I have been exercising my critical analytical writing about film (since that is what I want to do with my life) and that can be found at the following address Allan Gray's Imagination. I am originally from Evanston Illinois a suburb of Chicago, and I moved to Lincoln when I was five, I have lived here, with the exception of a 2 year stint in Georgia, ever since, and while I do intend to move out of here after graduation, I will always have a special place in my heart for this city.

Anywho (once again), I really hope to become more involved on this board and I know that I have a lot to learn (and eventually something to contribute)... so lets go!

Oh and here is what I look like generally...

I'm a (mostly) native Nebraskan, and got into green when my husband Josh and I decided to build a straw bale house here in Lincoln. 10 years later, we own a business that sells green interior finishes in the Midwest and nationwide. I've been in and out of involvement with various local green groups, but the main focus has been our business. Our ongoing joke has been, "If it will work in Lincoln, it will work anywhere..." - and I've been really glad to see the change in our customer base in terms of their knowledge and interest. Its been a pretty slow progression here in our relatively small community, but we still feel like our community and region is coming along nicely. We could all do more, but every little bit helps!
Thanks for starting the group - I'm excited to see how big it can get! - Jen

Hello.My name is Pepe.
I have been in Lincoln allmost 5 years.I have been wanting to learn about recycling, permaculture&sustainable structures such as earthships, strawbale, adobe etc.However.I've only been to one hands on workshop (in Ohio).I have faith that Lincoln will host such workshops in the near future.
I own a tiny 4 table Bistro on Havelock, and try to support local farmers by using their produce whenever possible.
Although I've mentioned bartering for bike parts on saturdays.I will do barter anything else that is within reason.
I am very excited, and glad that Andrea has started this group.I believe great things will happen in Lincoln for 2009

Hey there, folks!

I'm another graphic designer here in Lincoln. Originally from Kansas, and went to school in Iowa, but Nebraska is my home and Lincoln is my hometown. There've been some good years here, and there's always good people, so here's hoping that both will stay true.

As long as I've been a designer (yes, like Andrea I geek out over print, web and anything else graphical in nature) I've had somewhat of an activist slant to it. It makes only too much sense to me: design is about communicating, and there's not a whole lot that I'd like to help communicate more than the need for solutions to some of this messy world's issues. Lately I've been shifting into the environmental side of things, which needless to say is a massively complex deal. But it's one of the most important, and easily the most fascinating.

So I'm learning, getting involved, and having fun meeting people. Like I said, there's always been good people here, and I'm finding there's way more enthusiastic and creative souls around town than I figured. It's pretty cool. Aside from trying to bring in sustainable practices at home and the office, I've been involved with Lincoln Green by Design, mainly the Business subcommittee.

Speaking of around town, if I'm not downtown or at home, I'm usually out on the bike. Once it starts keeping steadily above 20 degrees or so, I'm up for some wicked hauls around the area.

Good to get to know everyone. I'm Executive Director at Community CROPS, which supports a dozen and counting community gardens around Lincoln. We also have a farm training program and offer lots of garden themed classes and a CSA. (www.communitycrops.org)

I'm also on the board of Open Harvest and involved in various other environmental groups like Wachiska Audubon, Lincoln Bioneers and the Nebraska Herbal Society.

In my occasional free time I can be found in my garden growing veggies, out on a native prairie somewhere or reading a book on sustainability. There are a lot of cool things going on in Lincoln and I hope they can get better connected and everyone can work together for some awesome solutions for our community.

Hi, I'm Doug Boyd and I've lived in Lincoln since 1980. Through the late 80's & 90's I worked for the City of Lincoln, Citizen Information Center doing video production. From the late 90's through today I've been self-employed doing both video production and Real Estate sales as a Realtor with Woods Bros. I've always been a bit of a dreamer. I remember as a teenager back in the 70's, during that energy crisis, I wanted to get into a business that supported energy independence, renewable resources and improved efficiency. It looked to be the way of the future. After a long hiatus perhaps that future is finally here, and oddly enough my business lends itself to realizing some of those old dreams by producing videos and doing eduction projects about energy efficiency, by helping real estate clients make choices that support sustainability and by helping to advocate for sound thinking in improving and expanding the "built environment" in a way that is ecologically sound and appropriate for Nebraska.

Hi! I grew up here in Lincoln, the ultimate DIY town as far as I can tell! Lately, like most of America, I think we've become too lazy, expecting to be able to buy everything we need instead of grow/make/do it ourselves. I'd like to help change that. Maybe the crappy economy will help, and maybe it won't... I think we should take it as self-evident that we ought to be able to do without consumerist products, packaging, and especially plastic. We should also adopt a bicycle-friendlier attitude for in-town commuting. Do more with less -- that means we're not enriching the mean old greedmongers who have got us into this mess to begin with! ;) Anyone up for frothy conversation over frothier coffee?

Hello there Lincoln GreenScene!

I'm a native Oregonian but long-time transplant here in NE (since 1984) and a Grandmama (my most important job). I'm "semi-retired" which means that I am now devoting most of my days to nonremunerative community-supporting work like sick and/or elderly home visits for St. Pat's in Havelock, hospice respite for Tabitha, FoodNet and more. I am so glad that a PO aware group is active in Lincoln!! I'm a longtime LATOC reader. Tyler- good luck with the SRI. I used to have Calm Eagle Family Financials down in the Haymarket.

Peace to you.

This is a great site!

My name is Jason Davis and I'm a small business owner here in downtown Lincoln. I also teach graphic design and printing courses at Southeast Community College. My business, Screen Ink, offers mainly design, print and embroidery services but we also house a small gallery space in our front showroom along with what we are now terming our "apparel outlet".

Our gallery offers solo exhibits for local artists every month with opening receptions on first Fridays. The showroom is a place to house this great art plus our inventory and overstock of blank goods as well.

We became as green as possible in 2005, converting to american soybean based solvents and offering water based inks. Since that point we have been pushing to convert any form of operation in our business to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly one. This includes offering recycled cotton garments and accessories, paperless invoicing, energy free water based printing and recycled paper poster printing (or any other paper project for that matter).

Screen Ink is also proud to present itself to the city of Lincoln and beyond as a completely transparent operation. If customers want to see their project in production and gain a better understanding of the processes used to print both garments and paper projects, they're more than welcome to step back into our printshop to view their goods being printed. We love what we do and enjoy talking about it to others.

In closing I suppose I would like to mention that we have a plan in motion to begin offering basic screen printing classes by late 2009! If you want to learn more about the process, obtain a beginners DIY screen printing pack and have some fun with a group of tshirt enthusiasts, then check our website later this year for class dates to come!

Cheers!
