Lincoln Green Scene

Lincoln, NE: sharing what "green" we have to attract what we lack.

As one of the founders of this site, I wanted to make a statement here about why we are integrating individual discussion with opportunities for commercial advertising.

The main point here is that Lincoln, like many communities does not have a system for encouraging its members to come together to see how sustainability can be not only good for the environment, it can be good for the local economy.

Really, it doesn't matter why you want to nominate a local business as a super star, as long as it has something to do with their contributions toward sustainability.

It can be something as small as recycling office paper, to being an enterprise solely focused on green services or products.

What we are trying to do here is get the word out to people who are looking to patronize businesses who are making a contribution to saving the planet, and tell businesses what people are looking to them to do!

So, by going green, we want Lincoln to also see the green. Energy, and environmental innovations will have the greatest impact on the future of the economy, and we want to be ahead of the curve.

I attended the sustainability seminar today, and talked to Pete Stadig (pstadig@knb.org) with the Keep Nebraska Beautiful Materials exchange program. The program he works with is the exact thing that the Green Scene could help be a catalyst for. Local businesses, if you haven't checked this out, do it! http://www.knb.org/exchange.html
You might find an innovative way to help your bottom line in a tough economy.

I'd nominate Dixon Power Systems which is run by Jon and Holly Dixon. As someone with a bit of wind expertise myself, I have nothing but positive things to say about their business and their approach to it. I could be wrong but I think they have installed more small wind systems in Nebraska than any other organization. They also do solar-electric and solar thermal systems as well as standby generation. Kind of one stop shopping for renewable energy in our area. May they and their business live long and prosper.

I second the nomination for Dixon power and would add SWT Energy in the mix as well. Being a clean energy business in Nebraska is no easy feat and we are all chewing on our buckskin jackets right now! There are differences among these businesses, though. Folks like Jon Dixon, Ed Toribio (Kearney) and very few others are not only engaged in the business but they donate their time to speak at events (all three of us in Kearney, again, 10 Nov) and see the big picture in all this. It is not just about making a sale. How many hours have we spent (wasted) in the capital trying to get legislators to do the right thing? How many donated hours have we given to speak at events, burn our fuel, sleep in cars and count change and go without eating to forward things green in Nebraska? Countless.

On the one hand I am so encouraged to know folks like Dave Tobias, Jon Dixon, RandySchantell, Ed Toribio, Rita Correll and the like but what pisses me off is how hard things have to be. How much resistance we get from status quo coal junkies and how much stress and frustration we have to deal with to try and do the right thing. Thanks also to the 'old grey hairs' like Dennis Keim, Bing Chen, Todd Sneller and so on who blazed a trail that we are trying to find again.

In my book, a green super star is someone who acts contrary to their own best interest for the common good, in hopes it will do some good for the future. Being part of these unselfish efforts will undoubtably be a highlight in my life. On the other side, I can can recognize a poser from a 100 yards away.....
